Trawlerman's rash

another use for a green team fish box.....
the Nowell's fleet in tier.....
Ajax takes ice ready for the off early tomorrow morning
gas bottles at the ready to destroy the JTS....
last day in port for the Cesca before .......
she heads round the corner and up to Milford....
boxes of Mor Kis left for bait
and boxes that go back aboard the Ajax...
these are not the hands that do dishes...
these, a Trawlerman's hand, with a couple of scratches......
years of graft.....
and some with a case of, 'Trawlerman's rash'.

Whats the connection between the George Johannes and the Cesca?

Like a scene reminiscent of Hitchcock's, The Birds hundreds of starlings head for an unusual roosting spot every evening underneath the Buccaneer Shell Shop outside Penzance wet dock. Observant boat watchers will have spotted the boat in the shot is the Rowse family's ex-crabber Stereden va Bro, gutted by fire several years ago and now rebuilt as a classic sail boat....
in a flat calm, a heavy swell in the harbour - a scene you won't get on the East coast...Fresh & Freeze Cornish Sardine insulated tubs wait alongside the transport.....
ahead of the ChloeT, the George Johannes has both sets of gear in the air....
and by the look of the the twine and dolly rope waiting on the quay, Nigel and the boys are not finished yet......
ahead of them, there is some serious 'reparations', as they say in France, going on aboard the Lisa Jacqueline....
though the painter obviously went home early....
the beamers make a dramatic show in the dusk.....
as do the shore lines.....
more unfinished painting, this time aboard the ChloeT...
last but not least, the answer to the question heading up the post is Milford - as in Milford Mike ex-skipper of the George Johannes and Milford, which is where TO50, the Cesca is bound on Sunday as she is off to a new owner and home!
Not good news for Lisa from London who is a big fan of the Cesca!
What will replace her in the Rowse fleet?

Nellie the beamer

taken in almost the same position as the day she took ice for the start of the last trip, the CKS makes her way back to her berth....
as the sun goes down, young Dan gets a lesson in handlining for mackerel at the back of the quay....
aboard the Nellie there's a yarn with Arnie in the stern
and some very neat masonry work being carried out by the pilot's office...
not a breath tonight which will make the sardine boats happy...
some shop-fitting on the corner by the bridge underway... and a little light study along the prom.

Padstow netters pile fish in the western end of the market

early Tuesday with our yellawellies to the fore, sometimes you've just go to get in there and do the job yourself it seems!
moving in after the Charisma, also from Padstow leaves for home...

tour guide Lionel leads the way with a group of visitors....
as the Berlewen, from Padstow, heaves a line ashore to take a berth at the market...
it seems Ocean Fish have joined the colourful fish wagon fraternity....
tons of pollack (the new cod) from the Charisma, which is fast becoming the preferred white fish in eco-friendly London chippy Tom's Place, seen here in 660 litre tubs....
up on the slip, the ABS is getting the hull treatment as the spring tide makes getting her 80 odd feet (she was lengthened years ago along with the Sarah Shaun) onto the slip on the neaps...
bathed in the early morning sun and mist.

This is one big crab ship!

The chain mat is looking ragged aboard the George Johannes.....
despite the early evening mist at sea the harbour is bathed in moonlight....
which plays some strange colour cast over the boats....
time to clear the deck......
high-tech gear is the order of the day in many of the fleet these daysout of the water and on the slip, the new crabber ABS looms large in the mist!

Newlyn building projects near completion

How well do you know your harbour, what was built in 1908?
Ready to go back aboard, green team boxes.....
Two of a number of building projects currently nearing completion on the site of the old Pilchard Works and the stores next door.....
so too further up in the hill in old town...
and two more almost finished....
the JTS has now lost her gearbox....
while the main remains to be removed....

Squirrel signs are busy doing what they do best but not so much call for these days in the world of vinyl adhesive signs, signwriting....
this is what has recently attracted the attention of twitchers in the harbour, a young Icelandic gull.....
and an adult in flight!

video

See how the experts aboard the Jannie use a springer to turn her against the quay without losing any paint!
