The Rowney - on the way in - on the way out? maybe not!

Not too sure what the Billy Rowney is up to - on the way in one minute - on the way out the next? But - one to watch this - the AIS tracking has picked her up on the way out today from where it stopped tracking her yesterday - that makes it look as if she has turned about! - confirmed by checking the time/date display on the tracking arrows.

This happens because AIS uses a low power VHF signal, it roughly works on line of sight and because the AIS receiving aerial is 'up Pendeen' it loses the signal from the boats when they get near the coastline between Gwennap head and Mousehole. Atmospherics play a part in the range of VHF aswell, when we are experiencing High pressure the range of vhf is greatly increased.

I figured this was the cause of the missing tracks. I'm in contact with a couple of the tracking sites to see if I can host an aerial so that Mounts Bay gets better coverage - more often than not the Anglian Princess does not show up when she is on station in the Bay.
