Rods in the harbour
Half way through completion of a commissioned blackboard with a nod the the Rosebud........
Interfish are in the fish with the Gordon back in town.....
plenty of work over the spring tide for the boys on the Silver Dawn by the looks of the loaded trailer.....
good sardine fishing with the Lyonesse by the looks of the tubs on the quayside......
for may years, mysterious images of so-called 'rods' have abounded on the net - well, here they are caught on camera for the first time flying around the harbour in Newlyn......
a good haul of porbeagle's were on the market this morning, the biggest (behind) being 94 kilos.....
looks like Smarts are laden with silver and gold today.....
a welcome sign in Penzance, the Dry Dock is back in action and currently plying host to the Scilly supply boat, Gry Maritha.

En passant, on exercise
Heading out on exercise, the Paul Alexander raises her bow.......
and passes one of the new Tamar class boats.....
followed closely by Penlee's Beth Sell......
as relief boat, Edward and Barbara Pridmore makes her way to the gaps.....
the exercise begins in earnest......
with the sardine shoals currently anywhere between the Runnelstone and the Longhsips the ring netters are having to leave town early in order to get to the grounds in time to shoot.....
the Pride of Cornwall begins to make way......
as the inshore trawler Harvest Reaper arrives......
if you can't stand the heat.......
two of a kind, the Pilchard Works fleet on the Canner's Slip.......
ever keen to raise their green credentials, Marco's boys aboard the Dom Bosco, one of the the Rowse fleet, are now pressure-washing their fleet of pots before shooting them back.......... plenty of advice is available for free down the quay.

Shades of the red end of the spectrum this evening
With owners Ocean Fish having just joined forces with Buccaneer Boats of Hayle the future looks bright, if not orange as, possibly nudging a knot or so over the harbour speed limit, the satsuma coloured sardine slayer Resolute powers her way past the marina berths.....
all hands on deck aboard the Crystal Sea II.......
as she takes fuel from Consols Oils......
aboard the Ajax another fleet of nets comes ashore.....
the brand new Myghal makes a peacockesque dash to the market to land in the evening light.

Catch it while you can!
Available on BBCi player for the rest of the week, broadcast on Sunday evening gone, BBC's tribute to Keith Floyd whom, amongst other things, made it cool for guys to cook. This was just one of the changes to British culture that the great man made through his ground breaking approach to cooking on TV. Way back in 1984, he predicted that, in the future, chefs would be as celebrated as rock stars and Formula 1 race drivers. Contributions from Marco Pierre White, Sophie Grigson, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal, Michael Winner, Gary Rhodes, Hester Blumenthall all attest to the man's incredible knowledge of food and wine which, through his award winning shows he passed on to his 'little gastronauts'. Not least of the bon viveur's legacy was his genuine interest in the provenance of ingredients through seeking out local producers wherever he traveled - an experience Newlyn and other Cornish ports were lucky enough to share in on many occasions with the rest of the world.
Thirty nine minutes in, the show finds him battling with a Westerly gale on the North Quay in Newlyn reading an ode to the humble pilchard. Standing in front of an outdoor cooking location, the tribute ends with his own words, "I think I must be one of the luckiest chaps in the whole world, I travel it, I eat it, I drink it, I smell it and I touch it". Millions of his 'gastronauts' must feel that, they too, shared that journey with him.

Big bass grace Monday's market
The beautifully restored Leader is back in town again......
unmissable new black an bright yellow topped tubs on the Lyonessese's there might not be many m,ackerel about but the size of these are verging on 1Kg each.....
not often the boys get bass as big as boxes, the NikNak must have been pleased with these guys in his day's work.....
a big haul of the finest reds from the Lizard's Scorpio again.....
netter's fish fills the western end of the auction hall......
off out the market, a box makes an escape bid.....
the Lyonesse is in the swim of Cornish sardines again it seems!

See, the Ripplemeister set a full set of sails on Sunday
Not for the feint hearted, setting a full set of sails in the harbour can only be attempted in light airs, and so it was on Sunday morning when all hands mustered aboard the Ripple. Already at sea in the Bay was the other St Ives registered lugger, Barnabus and Mount's Bay Lugger Association's very own Happy Return. See a short slideshow of the day's lugger sailing events as they unfolded here.
